Trastevere
The Trastevere area consists of a maze of narrow streets that is still, despite evident gentrification, one of the city's most authentically Roman neighbourhoods.
Literally translated, Trastevere means "across the Tiber" (ten minutes walking distance to the historical centre).
The action of Trastevere centres around several piazzas, especially the lovely Piazza S.Maria in Trastevere, home to the city's oldest official church, founded in about AD 220.
Trastevere is close to some of the city's major parks, lovely for strolling, relaxing and in the case of the Janiculum to the north, for some of the best views of Rome.
By night, this is the recognised meeting place for locals and visitors alike to head for the nightlife - restaurants, clubs, enoteche, pizzerias and bars - that is steadily taking over the area.
Because of the way the Tiber River curves through town like a big letter S, the layout of Rome is quite unusual.
Places that are "across the river" and thus - one would think - are not as strategically placed, actually turn out to be closer to more main attractions than other spots which are right in the heart of the historical center.
For instance, some parts of Trastevere, the neighborhood that lies across the river, are ideally located for touring.
And yet, because Trastevere was isolated for centuries by a lack of plentiful bridges, it has developed its own distinct flavor.
Still today it often feels like a lazy country village.
In the past decade, its intricate alleys and winding streets have become meccas for young Romans, who love to frequent the many pubs, restaurants and boutiques.
You'll find this area a most wonderful one for shopping, whether for food at the nearby outdoor market which takes place every morning in Piazza San Cosimato, or in the many funky shops that line every street in the neighborhood.
Typical Roman restaurants abound, and just around the corner is the Pasquino Theatre, every American expatriot's favorite Roman hangout, where English-language films are shown every day.
The apartments for rent in this area are very nice and well furnished.
