Mapdesc[0]= "St Peter\'s Basilica"+"
Once the largest church in Christendom, but still the most important, St Peter\'s Basilica is the centre of Roman Catholicism.
A church has stood on the site for almost two thousand years.
The emperor Constantine I built the first basilica, at the beginning of the 4th century, on the site of what was thought to be the martyrdom of St Peter.
The present church dates back to the beginning of the 16th century, took over one hundred years to build, and employed the talents of a wide range of artists, including Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo and Bernini.
The Vatican Museums
The Vatican Museums are home to a staggering range of treasures, but the most famous and the one which everyone wants to see is the Sistine Chapel.
While this will be the climax of any tour, one should also make time for frescoes by Raphael and a selection of the many sculptural masterpieces from ancient Rome, including the awe-inspiring statue of Laocoon.
Click for apartments in this area"
Mapdesc[1]= "Piazza Navona
During the Christmas season this square is packed with stalls selling toys, sweets and decorations for the Nativity scene or Christmas tree, making it a favourite spot for children. Its unusual shape recalls the time of Domitian, who built a stadium for equestrian displays here. The Fountain of the Rivers, with the obelisk, and the Fountain of the Moor, with the god of the sea, at the centre of the square, are both by Bernini.
Campo dei Fiori
Tradition says that Campo dei Fiori was named after the woman loved by Pompey, Flora, but it is more likely to have come from something a bit less romantic in the 14th century, Campo dei Fiori was a long-abandoned field filled with flowers. In the second half of the 19th century the square was used for a colourful market that has been held each morning since then. It was also the scene of many executions, most notably that of Giordano Bruno, the philosopher who was burned here in 1600. The statue dedicated to him replaced a fountain that was moved to the nearby Chiesa Nuova square, and a reproduction of it was moved to the side of the Campo dei Fiori.
Click for apartments in this area"
Mapdesc[2]= "Termini Train station
After 14 months of work, the Termini railway station now looks like a functional modern building. It offers visitors a wide variety of bars, restaurants and over 100 shops. It was first built in 1867 upon the wish of Pope Pius IX, when it was baptised \'Termini\' because of its proximity to the \'Terme di Diocleziano\' (Diocletian\'s Baths). In 1938, during the Fascist period, it was demolished and rebuilt on the design of Mazzoni who also designed the buildings on the Via Marsala and the Via Giolitti. The station was not ready for Hitler\'s visit to Rome in 1939 so he was met at Ostiense station instead. The station is one of Italy\'s most interesting Rationalist designs since the war."
Mapdesc[3]= "Trastevere
It is strange to think that this area of Rome was originally built to be a city port where storehouses held goods at the time of Augustus and continued to do so until the end of the 19th century. Trastevere then became a downmarket residential quarter and has now developed into a very desirable quarter. The heart of the district is Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere with its lovely church, a 17th century palazzo and a fountain in the middle which is probably Rome\'s oldest, having been designed by architects such as Bernini, Fontana and Della Porta. There are still some well-conserved medieval houses. On Sunday mornings, you can visit the 7th Corte dei Vigili in Via dei Salumi, and if you enter the guards\' rooms, you will see grafitti on the walls written by Roman soldiers who served the emperors from Septimus Severus to Caracalla, in addition to notations of their guard duty.
Click for apartments in this area"
Mapdesc[4]= "Piramide Cestia
This monument is the tomb of Caius Cestius, Praetor and Tribune of the plebeians during the reign of Emperor Augustus. Cestius, who had visited the pyramids in Egypt, decided to create one for himself as a tomb. Made in white marble, it is incorporated in the Aurelian walls. During the second half of the 17th century, while the base of the pyramid was being cleaned, various pieces of columns were found, along with marble bases with the names of the descendants of Caius Cestius engraved on them, and a bronze foot.
Inside the monument, there were no precious objects, probably because a law had been passed forbidding excess luxury and the burying of gold. As a result, the gold-embroidered clothing belonging to Caius was sold, and the heirs used the money to erect the large bronze statue, of which just the foot remains."
Mapdesc[5]= "Fontana di Tevi
Tradition has it that throwing a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain guarantees a swift return to the world\'s most beautiful city. Anita Ekberg\'s dip init was immortalized in Fellini\'s \'La Dolce Vita\', and italyn actor Totò even sold it to an American, passing himself off as its owner. Earlier it was the setting for the award-winning \'Three Coins in the Fountain\' motion picture, ensuring its popularity worldwide. Designed by Nicola Salvi for Pope Clemente XII, it was completed in the second half of the 1700s. The statues in the centre represent Neptune supported by Tritons on either side while rococo-style Poli Palace provides the perfect backdrop."
Mapdesc[6]= "University area of Rome"
Mapdesc[7]= "Colosseum
No visit to Rome is complete without having seen its magnificent Colosseum, a vast amphitheatre with seating for 55,000 that was designed as a horse racing circuit and arena for animal fighting and gladiatorial battles. Upon its completion, spectacular 100-day celebrations were organized as part of the opening ceremony in 72 AD. Its name is believed to come from Nero\'s enormous statue of Colossus that stood close by. The admission charges are about EUR10.
The Roman Forum
The Forum was designed to be the centre of social, political and economic life in the city. The innumerable remains include the well-conserved triumphal arch of Emperor Septimius Severus, with reliefs depicting his victories and the base of the Temple of Saturn with its eight columns and their splendid Ionic capitals. The \'Rostrum\' is the famous platform from which Mark Antony gave his oration in Shakespeare\'s play after Julius Caesar's assassination. The platform became the setting for many important events in Rome's history. It was named the \'rostrum\' after the bows of the ships that form the decorative motif. The Temple of Vesta was the home of the Vestal Virgins, charged with keeping the sacred flame alight. The circular foundations still remain, near to a garden in which traces of the House of the Vestal Virgins can still be seen. The Basilica of Constantine and Massentius was used as the court, and the three remaining barrel-vaulted naves give an idea of its gigantic structure. The Arch of Titus celebrates victories in Judea, and in the reliefs you can see the spoils of war, including an altar and a seven-armed chandelier. Admission is free; guide tours in italyn, English, German, French or Spanish cost EUR3.20
Click for apartments in this area"
Mapdesc[8]= "Spanish steps
An incredible, almost theatrical square with the lovely Spanish steps leading up to the Chiesa di Trinità dei Monti. One of the most important fashion shows is held here, the steps being used as a catwalk. It is now an international meeting point. The fountain known as the \'Barcaccia\' (boat) was commissioned by Urbano Barberini to commemorate the alliance made with the King of France, whose coat of arms can be seen on Trinità dei Monti.
The square leads into several famous streets, Via Dei Condotti, Via Frattina and Via Borgognona with their luxurious boutiques, and Via Del Babuino with its antique shops."
Mapdesc[9]= "Via Veneto
This is a street that has lived through alternate fortunes. In the early 20th century it was a fashionable street for strolling, with elegant venues such as Caffe Bussi and Caffè Rosati and smart hotels such as the Majestic, l\'Eden, l\'Excelsior e l\'Ambasciatori Palace. After a relatively quiet period, the 1960s, in particular the film \'La Dolce Vita\', put Via Veneto back into the limelight of society life, with the antics of the stars and the audacious chases by paparazzi led by Tazio Secchiaroli. Today, Via Veneto has returned to peace and quiet, and its famous open-air cafes are frequented by tourists."
Mapdesc[10]= "Pantheon
Commissioned by Marcus Agrippa, restored by Domitian, and subsequently rebuilt by Hadrian (who added the dome) before being turned into a church in the early 7th century by Pope Boniface IV. The building\\'s sole source of light is the opening at the dome\'s apex (the oculus); according to popular legend, this formed the base for the bronze pinecone that is now in the Vatican'\s \'Pigna\' courtyard, where it is used as a fountain. Many famous italyns are buried in the Pantheon, including Renaissance painter Raphael and King Vittorio Emanuele I."
Mapdesc[11]= "Museo Borghese
This collection is housed in a building constructed in 1613 for Cardinal Scipione Borghese, one of Bernini\'s greatest patrons. In fact, this great sculptor has exhibited some of his most famous sculptures here; amongst them is the renowned \'Apollo and Daphne.\' When one thinks of the Museo Borghese, the sculpture that immediately springs to mind is Canova\'s \'Pauline Borghese,\' in which she poses as Venus, wearing just a drape around her midriff. There are six major pieces by Caravaggio in the Galleria, including \'The boy with a basket of fruit\' and the \'Madonna della Serpe.\'Titian is also represented with \'Sacred and Profane Love,\' Rafael with \'The Deposition,\' and there are important works by Correggio. The gallery can only hold 300 visitors at a time, so it is advisable to book in advance."
Mapdesc[12]= "Santa Maria Maggiore
Santa Maria Maggiore harmonises a great variety of architectural styles: the naves date from the 15th century, the bell-tower is medieval, the ceiling is from the Renaissance and the domes are Baroque. Here, one might say, the entire history of ecclesiastical architecture is united under one roof. The Capella Sforza is by Michelangelo. The finest fresco painters of the age took turns decorating the walls of this imposing edifice, and it is said that the magnificent ceiling was gilded with the first gold brought back from America by Christopher Columbus. Over the years certain details of the basilica have been destroyed, notably the mosaics that used to decorate the apse, which dates from 1200. The bell-tower was rebuilt in the 14th century, to the original design, after being destroyed in an earthquake. Popes Sixtus V and Paul V are buried here."
